Organic Food Labeling - Are you being fooled by marketing hype?

Non-GMO verified products are NOT equivalent to organics. 

Non-organic companies can use non-GMO verification as a shortcut to appear to have equal status to organics without actually living up to or investing in those standards.  Organic ingredients and organic certification are more expensive than non-GMO verification.  Due to GMOs being a current hot topic, organic manufacturers are now being pressured into paying for both certifications to keep "on trend" despite already sourcing higher quality ingredients.  This makes competing in the food industry even more difficult than it already is for organics.  

 GMO PROJECT VERIFICATION ADDS CONFUSION TO THE MARKETPLACE AND DISTRACTS FROM THE ORGANIC MOVEMENT. 

Some products that have never contained GMO's (as not every crop is GM) are choosing to get GMO verification to make them stand out on store shelves, appear healthier, and gain a leg up on their competition.  The focus on GMO's delays the inevitability of organics becoming more prominent and popular in the mainstream, which would have more impact. 

So what can we do?

As informed shoppers, we can put our dollars toward organics, which will support the non-GMO movement as well as a more sustainable food system with healthier foods.  Reading and understanding labels are important, as a product's ingredients matter more than just its certifications.  A non-GMO verified tortilla chip is still a deep fried corn chip.
