Chlorella: Iron-Rich Super Algae
Iron is an essential mineral that helps make several important proteins in the body, including hemoglobin and myoglobin, which help transport oxygen to the body's tissues. You need an appropriate balance of iron in your body - too little may cause anemia and too much may be toxic - and although your body stocks iron, it loses about 10% of its stores each day. The good news is that you can get all the iron you need by consuming a variety of plant foods. In addition to chlorella, good sources include grains, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), nuts, seeds and leafy greens. Vitamin C helps increase the bioavailabilty of iron from plant foods - so citrus, camu camu berries, sea buckthorn berries, strawberries, and bell peppers are all great complements to iron-rich plant foods.
Putting It Into Practice:
Chlorella is one of the few superfoods in this book that is available only in supplement form, typically as powder, granule, liquid extract or tablets. Liquids, granules, and powders can be added to freshly pressed juices and smoothies. Green chlorella - containing powders also provide a convenient way to "drink" your greens when you may not have access to to fresh juices or smoothies; simply add a scoop to bottled juice or water while traveling.
If you choose to consume chlorella, purchase products from a reputable company that can verify its products have been standardized and tested for purity.
